Jorge Mejia was born in Colombia. At thirteen, he moved to Miami, where he began playing the piano every waking moment. A classical pianist throughout his early musical career, Mejia studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and eventually graduated from the University of Miami with a piano performance degree. His influences span from the austere beauty of Bach, to the explosive splendor of Beethoven, to the waving, lilting melodies of the Cure, to the raw power of U2, to the electronic pulses of drum and bass.
In 2001 Mejia released alive under the project name the green room. Released independently, alive sold a few thousand units mainly via live shows and garnered a nice base of support for Mejia in South Florida.
In 2005, Mejia released allá en el monte, his second album, this one in Spanish. The release was made via a January 27th mtv Español special event (the live show was taped and then aired in the mtv Español feed under the title A Todo Volumen con Mejia [Full Volume with Mejia]). In addition, some of the videos are on rotation at the channel and, if ringtone sales are any indication, the record should do well in iTunes, Sony Connect, and now, Mejias new partner, the music page at VOY.
Spanish release notwithstanding Mejia is already at work on his next album.
