Rey Ruiz was born on a 21 June in Havana, Cuba. He cut his teeth professionally as a singer with renowned orchestras like “La Riverside” and “Los Dadas” at the Havana Hilton Hotel.
His debut album of 1992, “Rey Ruiz,” dazzled salsa lovers. It went Gold and Platinum and won a Billboard Award, a Lo Nuestro award and a TV y Novelas award. Ruiz also won the 1993 Salsa Tropical Award for Best New Singer.
His second album, “Mi Media Mitad,” of 1994, made the Billboard Magazine hit charts. It also went Gold and Multi Platinum in Puerto Rico and the U.S. and Gold in Colombia.
His third album, “En Cuerpo y Alma,” of 1995, surprised Rey’s fans because of his hallmark distinctive romanticism.
Ruiz’s fourth album, “Destino,” of 1996, opened new promising possibilities for his career as he began to write songs. That year Rey was honored with an ACE Award as Salsa Singer of the Year in New York. His fifth album, “Porque es Amor,” of 1997, meant another step forward for this tropical music singer.
Ruiz released “Ya Ves quien Soy” in 1998 with eight love songs. It included the song “Yo la amaba y la amaba” by Ricardo Quijano, a nostalgic salsa song that reached the top positions on the radio charts in the U.S. and Latin America.
In 2000 Ruiz seduced his fans with his seventh album, “Fenomenal.” “Mi Tentación” is the name Ruiz chose for the album released in 2004, which also features his hallmark sound.
Without the shadow of a doubt, Rey Ruiz is one of the leading figures of the tropical genre, and he will continue to conquer hearts with every song.
