Carlos Salas is one of the most important singers/songwriters on the local scene. His music is a mix of rock, funk, and soul that ranges from very intimate ballads to cool songs with lots of rhythm, without losing the characteristic authenticity and honesty of his lyrics. “Atardeceres de efecto invernadero” (2006 TDV Media & Entertainment) is a step forward both in composition and production. It is a fresh and mature album that displays Carlos’s high level of expression. With well oiled rhythmic sections, undulating keyboards, and guitars that harmonize and contribute, the listener will find himself wrapped in songs that not only will convey a message, but also will make him feel them in his own flesh. The album was produced by Andrés Bretel (who has worked with such artists as Gaia, Tonka, Wayo, Space Bee, Presidente Morsa, to name a few,) and he also made arrangements and played instruments, as well as recording, mixing, and mastering the album. The first single off the album, “Lista para el sol,” is already on Radio Bacán and the song “Ebrio en la vereda” was chosen by the young filmmaker Sandro Ventura for his second short film “Cabezas huecas,” due out in 2007. Carlos will also compose the film’s soundtrack. This album is a great new addition to Carlos’s extensive career as musician, guitar player, and songwriter. He began playing with different leading bands of the Lima scene of the nineties like La Jovena Yolanda (with which he won third place in the classic Miraflores Rock concert,) and Madre Matilda (of which he was founder and leading songwriter.) With the later band, he released two highly successful albums commercially and critically speaking. “Madre Matilda” (1998 Discos Hispanos) and “Círculos” (2000 Sony Music Peru.) They were two perfect albums with songs that reached number one on different Peruvian radio stations and which established the band (in spite of it being relatively new on the scene) as one of the favorites and one of the biggest and best known on the local scene. With the new millennium, Carlos Salas decided to take the next step in his music career, the release of his first solo album. His first album, “Bajo el sol” (2001, independently released,) had its eponymous promo single on rotation on radio America and its video (directed by the celebrated Peruvian director Percy Céspedez) was aired across Latin America on Ritmoson Latino and HTV. Two years later, he began recording his new album, which would go on to become the artist’s first official one: “¿Quién Serás Mañana?” (independently released in 2004.) The promo single “Qué bien estábamos (cuando estabas mal)” climbed to number one on the nationwide chart of Radio Miraflores and featured in the short film “Limbo” (2004 DVCAM,) directed by Ernesto Barraza Eléspuru (chosen for the “Imagen Jóven” festival of the 8th Latin American Cinema Convention at the La Católica Cultural Center, as well as obtaining a mention at the Cuzco Short Film Festival, and being selected for the Young Cinema Festival of Valencia, Spain.) Percy Céspedez directed the video for the album’s promotional campaign. Many songs off this album were also selected as incidental music for local productions like the soap opera “Demasiada belleza,” produced by Michel Gómez. The video of “¿Qué será de ti,?” directed by Andrés Bretel featured in different national TV channels. Back to the present, “Atardeceres de efecto invernadero” is a solid album with good songs and which shows Carlos Salas as a full-fledged artist.
