Julio Voltio must appear in court in April

The popular Puerto Rican rapper, Julio Voltio – famous for interpreting the song “Chulin Culin Chunfly” – traveled to the US in February to be in a series of shows and, even though he recently said in an interview that he is satisfied and proud to be able to take his music everywhere, he must now appear before Judge José Cruz Noel, who has put off his hearing until April 5th.

Radios where you may find this artist: Reggaeton.
Julio Voltio The reggaeton singer and two other members of his group had been exonerated of drug possession and sale by judge Aixa Rosado Pietri, who didn’t think the undercover agents were credible, but this judgment was challenged by the Appeals Court.

The judge Cruz Noel gave public prosecutor José Criado five days to present attorneys Ernie Cabán, Belinda Brignoni and Wilson Cabán with the list of calls made between agents Pedro Santiago and Juan Vargas on the night of February 24th last year. The agents ordered the bust on the rapper after surveillance in the Mayagüez Café, across from the city’s playground.

Recently, Voltio made an appeal against the police agents who busted him after receiving an anonymous report, which accused him of carrying firearms in his vehicle, something that ultimately turned out not to be true.

Voltio sees this as persecution of Latin rappers and himself as the first victim.

“The police offices violated his civil rights, threatened his dignity and privacy inappropriately,” Voltio’s lawyer, Ernie Cabán Santiago, explained.

Now public defender José Criado will have to also produce a list of the telephone calls received on Sargent Joel González’s cell phone. González alleges that a source tipped him that Julio Voltio was at a table in front of the stage he would later play on, selling and consuming drugs along with two others, who turned out to be sound technician René Quiñones and dancer Omar Martínez.

The preliminary hearing is still planned for next March 24th, when lawyer Belinda Brignoni will have to put forth a motion asking that judge Cruz Noel be dismissed for lack of jurisdiction.

Until now, the defense has told the court that the judgment against Voltio, Quiñones and Martínez shall be decided by jury next March 24th. but they’re considering trying it in a court of law; this will be discussed at the preliminary hearing next March 24th.
